I have Tourette. So now what?
Learning that you have Tourette Syndrome can be scary. I was scared
when I first found out that Tourette was causing the tics that I had. How
do you know what to do next?
When I was first diagnosed, I couldn't 'google' my condition and get
suggestions for what I should do. Kids today have more resources
available to help them learn how to deal with their TS, but some things
have not changed. Here are a few things I would like you to remember:
1. Find a doctor you like and trust, listen to them and ask
questions. This will help you understand the options that are available
to help you control the symptoms of TS.
2. Eat right. A good balanced diet can help your body better cope with
the symptoms of Tourette.
3. Exercise regularly. Keep your body moving and get some
exercise. You don't have to play sports to get exercise - choose
something that is fun for you and helps you keep motivated.
4. Stay positive and don't stop reaching for your goals. I didn't let
Tourette stop me from reaching my goal of becoming a Major League
Baseball player. Don't let Tourette stop you from reaching your personal
goals.
"My advice to you? Decide what you want to do
and go for it. Don't let your Tourette Syndrome
stand in the way of your personal success. If I can
do it, so can you ! "
